Slingshot Water Purifier
A Technology with the Potential to Save the World:
The Slingshot is a water purification device invented by Dean Kamen. This water purifier isn't manufactured for wide use due to some manufacturing obstacles: mobility and cost. Kamen's idea of the perfect purifier was to be able to have it in your house, and have it be lightweight and portable. As of now, the current model of the Slingshot is roughly the size of a miniature refrigerator and is heavy. Another issue is that it's too expensive, but Kamen hopes that one day it will be able to sell for $2,000 each. If you wanted to get your hands on one today, however, it would cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars.
The purpose of a water purifier is to take the 97% of water that is undrinkable, either from contamination or being natural salt water, and make it into clean, accessible drinking water. In October of 2004, Kamen first introduced his revolutionary device in a demonstration at a technology conference. He proved that it worked by running his urine through it and drinking the clean water that was produced. DEKA, the company that manufactures the purifiers, had produced 30 units. One of which spent its time in a village in Honduras. It was kept there for months, and ran successfully.
